Douglas fir trees need sunlight so they grow towards the light. The branches grow the best way to get the most sunlight. When the trees are large, the lower branches often do not get enough sunlight to produce enough sugars. These branches die and fall off. Douglas fir trees can stand a wide range of rainfall and temperatures. They adapt to the amount of rainfall that is available.
